Patient Profile

Visualize the patient's complete clinical journey, all on a single, configurable timeline.

Written by Domenico Pangallo

šŸ’” What is the Patient Profile?

The Patient Profile is a patient-level view that brings together clinical data from multiple SDTM domains into a shared timeline. Each domain is rendered as a graphical view, letting you compare events across data sources (e.g., exposures, lab values, adverse events) side by side for a single patient.

šŸŽÆ Goal
In this guide, you will learn how to open a patient profile, navigate the timeline, and customize your patient-level clinical data view.

Overview

In clinical research, understanding what happens to an individual patient often requires combining data from many sources: labs, exposures, adverse events, visits, medical history. The Patient Profile pulls these together into a single timeline-based view, so you can spot patterns and follow the patient's journey at a glance.

Use Cases

The Patient Profile is useful when you need to:

  • Build patient narratives for medical writing, safety reports, or case discussions.

  • Investigate a single patient's clinical journey across the trial.

  • Review a serious adverse event in the context of dosing, labs, and medical history.

Navigate to Patient Profile

Navigate to the Patient Profile module within your Rivia environment using the directory on the left-hand side of the page.

Analyze a Single Patient

Follow these two steps to open the profile of a specific patient:

  1. Select your Study from the study dropdown in the top navigation bar.

  2. Use the Patient ID selector to search for and open the patient of interest.

Once the patient is selected, a short demographic summary is displayed below the Patient ID, including key attributes such as age, sex, treatment arm, and site (e.g., 81 years old, Female, Xanomeline Low Dose arm, at 701).

ā„¹ļø A status icon next to the patient ID shows the patient's current status within the study (e.g., ongoing, discontinued, screen failure, completed).

Understand the Patient Profile Layout

The Patient Profile is split into two panels:

  • Left panel, Swimlane Selector: choose which data to display on the timeline.

  • Right panel, Timeline Graph: render the selected swimlanes on a shared horizontal axis.

Left Panel: Swimlane Selector

The left panel lets you choose which data to display on the timeline.

  • "Select" tab: browse available clinical domains and toggle individual swimlanes on or off.

  • "Ask Spark" tab (when enabled): an AI-powered assistant to help you query and explore patient data contextually. For a full walkthrough, see Ask Spark.

  • "Manual Selection" tab: switch between previously saved configurations without reselecting swimlanes each time. For a full walkthrough, see Profile Views.

  • Search bar: locate specific domains or clinical events across the patient's data.

Right Panel: Timeline Graph

The right panel renders your selected swimlanes on a shared horizontal timeline, enabling side-by-side comparison across domains.

Each swimlane represents one data series. Depending on the domain and its configuration, a swimlane is displayed in one of four visual formats:

Swimlane Type

Description

Point Event

Discrete events shown as individual points on the timeline (e.g., Visit, Disposition).

Line Event

Interval events shown as a line spanning start and end dates (e.g., Adverse Event, Medical History).

Plot

Numerical time series with data points (e.g., Laboratory, Vital Signs).

Interval Plot
(Exposure domain only)

Dose intervals with connected start/end markers.

Manage Swimlanes

You can add or hide swimlanes at any time, either from the left-panel selector or directly on the right panel.

Add a Swimlane

In the Select tab on the left panel, expand a domain (e.g., Exposure) and select the swimlanes you want to display. You can select all events in a domain at once (e.g., all Adverse Events), or pick only specific ones (e.g., a particular adverse event). The number next to each domain (e.g., 1/1, 5/38) shows how many swimlanes are currently active out of the total available.

Hide a Swimlane

There are two ways to hide a swimlane:

  • From the left panel: untoggle the swimlane checkbox in the Select tab.

  • From the right panel: click the hide button (eye with a slash) on the swimlane title to remove it directly from the view.

Configure Swimlane Labels

You can customize which properties are shown as swimlane labels. Click the Label Properties icon (sliders) at the top of a domain (e.g., Exposure) to open the configuration popover.

You can choose:

  • Primary label: the main value displayed on the swimlane (e.g., Actual Dose).

  • Secondary label: a complementary value displayed in parentheses next to the primary one (e.g., Planned Dose).

The selected fields then appear on every swimlane within that domain, formatted as: Primary (Secondary).

Navigate the Timeline

Several controls let you focus the timeline on the period that matters for your analysis:

  • "Date / Study Day" toggle: Switch the X-axis between calendar dates and study day numbering.

  • Time range selector: Adjust the visible date range by dragging the range handles.

  • "Zoom in / Zoom out" buttons: Narrow or expand the view to focus on a specific period.

  • "Reset" button: Return the timeline to the default full date range.

Explore Data Points

The Patient Profile offers two ways to inspect a single data point:

  • Hover over a data point: shows event details in a tooltip.

  • Click a data point: opens a right-side panel with all properties related to that data point. It also includes a View Source Row button that opens the source record in the file linked to that data point for full traceability.

Save a Profile Selection View

  1. Configure your swimlane selection as desired.

  2. Open the Manual Selection tab, and click Save to New.

  3. Enter a name for the configuration and click the blue Save button.

  4. The view appears in the saved views list and can be reopened at any time.

šŸ“š For a full walkthrough, see Profile Views.

Export as Image

On the top right, you can click the Export as PNG button to download the current Patient Profile view as a PNG image, ready for reports, presentations, or case narratives.

Best Practices

  • šŸ“Ž Use the "View Source Raw" button. When in doubt, jump to the raw record for traceability.

  • šŸ”Ž Use the search bar before scrolling. Faster than expanding every domain when you know what you're looking for.

  • šŸ–¼ Export your current view as PNG. Useful for case discussions, safety narratives, or pasting into a slide.
