Histograms and Bar Plots

A step-by-step guide on how to create histograms and its advance capabilities

The Visualizer panel offers a variety of plot types to help you explore your data. One of the most informative visualizations for clinical studies is the Histogram and Barplot.

💡 What is a Histogram and BarPlot?

A bar plot/histogram is a graphical representation of data using bars to show patterns, comparisons, or distributions.

🎯 Goal

In this document, you will learn how to build a histogram. Let's take the specific example of a histogram of patient counts per site by patient status.

To follow along, log in to your Rivia account using the button below.

Step 1: Select the data you want to plot

In the Panel Visualizer, first select the domain and data you want to visualize.

(See the “Visualizer” guide for details.)

Step 2: Select the type of values you want to display

Under the selected data, you can select if you want the bars to show counts (patient or event) or results (absolute values, change from baseline etc.)

Step 3: Make sure the Histogram plot type is selected

The plot type selected should now be the "histogram".

Step 4 & Final: Data Drill-Down using the Segments

Under the Segment tool, you should be able to play and drill down on the properties you want to segment the values by. This will create a bar per unique value within the selected property.

🎉Congratulations! You have now reached the end of the tutorial, and we are sure you are now able to recreate and generate your own barplots.

⚙️ Advanced Capabilities: Stacked Bars

It is possible to change the way the segments are displayed. By default, they will be shown as parallel segments; however, you can define in the configurations if you would rather see them as stacked bars.

💡 Pro tip!

Sometimes, stacking many segments can create a crowded plot; we can solve this by selecting the maximum number of segments allowed.
